I hosted my second workshop on April 6th, 2013 on the beautiful campus of Regent University! But unlike last year’s workshop where I focused more on taking family and couples portraits, this year I had three bridal models for the students to practice with! I also learned from my workshop last year that it was best to stick with one group of photographers for the first half for hands-on instruction with one model, then switch the groups about half way through to teach them the same principles with the same model. This worked much better for me, the models, and the students; the other two models were photographed by the students by themselves.

We started the day with classroom instruction to learn more about lighting, off-camera flash, composition, and posing. After we came back from lunch, we met the models in the lobby of the Communications Building where they were all dressed and ready to go! It’s pretty fun to see three different brides walking around with an entourage of photographers around them, but we made the most of the campus and took pictures just about everywhere… including laying down on the outdoor steps of the Regent Law Library – which happens to be one of my favorite shots from the day, showing how to look for your background while paying attention to your foreground and the lighting on the subject.

We ended the day with learning about my workflow and how to stay organized with all the images captured from a portrait or wedding. Among the topics we discussed were how to use Lightroom for post-processing and it was good to see a few light bulbs go off in the room, for those photographers who had “a-HA” moments – I think that’s what makes teachers want to teach, and it’s a good feeling to know that I’ve helped someone achieve their goals and expectations.

I hope to continue offering my workshop, but now that my busy season has started I have to focus on my awesome customers… till next time!
