A Return to Croatan Beach
Some weddings are all about the venue. Others are all about the people.
Destiny and Paul’s wedding had a little bit of both.
On a warm June morning at Croatan Beach in Virginia Beach, family and friends gathered just a few steps from the ocean to watch them finally say “I do.” The weather definitely reminded everyone that summer was on its way, but the beach breeze helped, and nobody seemed too concerned about the temperature once we got underway.
What made this location especially meaningful is that it wasn’t chosen by accident. Five years earlier, Paul proposed to Destiny on this same stretch of beach. Returning to the place where their engagement began felt like a fitting way to start the next chapter.
Five Years Later
A lot can happen in five years.
When Destiny and Paul got engaged, they probably couldn’t have predicted exactly what life would look like on their wedding day. Between then and now, they welcomed two children into their family, and both were part of the celebration.
One of my favorite things about weddings is that every couple arrives there by a different path. For Destiny and Paul, the wedding wasn’t the beginning of their family story. It was another important page in a story that was already well underway.
A Beach Wedding with Personality
The wedding party brought plenty of color to the beach with coordinating dark-blue Hawaiian-inspired attire that fit the relaxed coastal setting perfectly.
It felt appropriate for a ceremony by the ocean – comfortable, personal, and focused more on celebrating together than following a rigid formula.
The beach was busy with the usual summer activity, but once the ceremony began, the attention naturally shifted to the couple and the people who had traveled to be there with them.
A Quick Trip to the Oceanfront
After the ceremony wrapped up, we made our way to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Pier and Boardwalk for portraits.
Rather than focusing on large formal groups, we spent much of that time capturing moments with Destiny, Paul, and their children together. The boardwalk and pier gave us plenty of opportunities for relaxed family photographs, along with a few candid moments in between.
The area was filled with beachgoers, cyclists, sand soccer players, and vacationers enjoying the day, but that’s part of what makes the Oceanfront interesting. Life keeps moving around you, and sometimes those unscripted moments become the photographs people remember most.
A Meaningful Return
For a couple who traveled from Ohio to get married in the place where they got engaged, the day felt like a full-circle moment.
Not because everything was perfectly planned or perfectly timed, but because it reflected their story honestly.
A beach where an engagement happened. Two children who became part of the journey. Family and friends gathered close by. And a beautiful Virginia Beach day to bring it all together.
Congratulations, Destiny and Paul. Thank you for allowing me to be part of it.
