Rylie’s Virginia Tech Display Garden senior portraits in Virginia Beach turned into one of those sessions that meant more than just great photos.
I photographed her parents’ wedding in May 2006, and over the years I’ve been able to capture a few different moments for their family. So getting to document Rylie’s senior year felt like a full-circle experience, seeing the story continue into the next generation.

A Garden Setting That Just Worked
We met at the Virginia Tech Display Garden, and it gave us everything we needed without overcomplicating anything.
Soft evening light, clean greenery, and just enough variety to move around without forcing locations. The kind of setting where you can focus more on the person than the background—and let the session unfold naturally.
Variety Without Overthinking It
One of the things I liked most about this session was how much range we were able to get while keeping everything simple.
Rylie wore a few different outfits, including a floral dress and a white sundress that worked really well with the soft garden tones. She also brought a Longwood t-shirt and made sure to show off the back: “Virginia is for Lancers” which added a personal touch to the session.
We also captured a few images with her cap and gown, marking the transition that senior year is really all about. Those moments always hit a little differently because they’re simple, but they carry a lot of weight.
Including the People Who Got Her Here
We took time to capture family portraits with her mom, dad, and sister as well.
Those images matter just as much. Senior sessions are about one person stepping into what’s next, but they’re also about the people who helped get them there. Taking a few minutes to document that connection always makes the gallery feel more complete.
This session was a reminder of why I keep doing this.
A Full-Circle Moment
It’s not just about one shoot; it’s about being invited back into people’s lives over time. From a wedding 20 years ago to senior portraits now, it’s been an honor to document even a small part of their story.
