Mariah’s Senior Portraits | First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach

Mariah’s senior portraits at First Landing State Park was one of those sessions that came together effortlessly. Great weather, relaxed energy, and a sunset that absolutely delivered at the end of the night.

I’ve known her mom, Megan, since high school, so getting the opportunity to photograph this season for their family meant a lot. One of the best parts of this job is seeing life move through different stages and being invited to document those moments along the way.

Preparing for What’s Next

Mariah is graduating from her homeschool program and preparing for a huge next step: heading to Oklahoma City University to study commercial dance!

That world opens the door to so many opportunities. Commercial dancers can end up performing in live stage productions, music videos, concerts, tours, theme parks, television, and alongside major recording artists. It’s a demanding field that takes discipline and creativity, and it’s exciting to see her pursuing it.

First Landing Was the Perfect Setting

First Landing State Park always gives a session variety without making it feel overdone.

We were able to move through wooded areas, the boardwalk, and eventually down toward the water as the sun started dropping. The light at the end of the session was incredible – soft, warm, and exactly the kind of golden-hour glow photographers hope for.

The beach at sunset gave the final images a completely different feel from the earlier portraits, which helped the gallery feel balanced and complete without needing multiple locations.

A Relaxed Session with Natural Moments

One of my favorite things about this session was how easygoing it felt from beginning to end.

Mariah brought a calm confidence that translated really naturally in photos, and that made it easy to focus on genuine expressions and movement instead of stiff posing. That approach especially fits someone with a dance background because she already understands posture, movement, and expression in a really natural way.
