Planning Info

Whether you’re planning a family portrait, engagement portraits, senior portraits, or any other type of session, once you have decided to have your portraits taken with Kinstler Photography, please contact me to plan your session based on the type of location you prefer (beach, park, cityscape, countryside, your home, etc.) and what date(s) you’re available. I will check my schedule for you and help you determine the best location for your session. In order to reserve your date and time with me, please plan to pay the session fee by credit/debit card over the phone.

The first thing to do when planning your portrait session is to discuss with me your ideas and goals for the session. Not only do I need to know the style of images that you want, but also what clothing will work best for your session, where you want to hang your wall portraits, and what gifts you may need for friends and family. This is a very important part of the planning process because it helps everyone know what to expect when it comes time for the portrait session and the Purchase Session.

The next step is the actual portrait session itself, which lasts approximately 2 hours. Be prepared to have fun and trust me to make you look your best. I promise you’ll feel comfortable in front of my camera and you’ll be ecstatic when you see the results! Please feel free to change outfits during the session if you want some different looks – just be sure to let me know in advance.

Finally, the most important (and possibly the best experience) of the whole process is the Purchase Session, where you’ll get to view your photographs in a multimedia presentation! Since this is the only time you will get to view the portraits, we’ll spend a good amount of time narrowing down the images so that you get exactly what you want to finalize your order. Anyone involved with the final purchase, or who wish to place an order of their own, should be present at this time. The Purchase Session may last 1-2 hours depending on how many questions you have, but hopefully we’ll take care of that during the first step at the initial consultation, so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting and how much it will cost.

Note: The Purchase Session may occur directly after the portrait session if you’re visiting the area, or we’ll schedule it for a time that works with the schedule(s) of everyone who needs to be present at the presentation. For your convenience, we can meet at your home or vacation residence.

Congratulations on your engagement and thank you for your interest in my wedding photography services! I’ve been photographing weddings since 2005 and I’ve enjoyed coming to each wedding to create memories for the Bride & Groom, their families, and their guests. But wedding photography is more than just showing up on the wedding day with a camera and taking pictures. A lot more thought goes into creating a photograph than just clicking a button. Not only do I have to pay attention to the lighting around me, but also I must anticipate the moments that take place in between the moments. Like the flower girl’s glance at the bride getting ready, or the groom’s genuine laugh at something said by his best man. Memories like these must be captured in order to preserve the emotion of the wedding day. Below is a little advice to help you with planning the wedding day and creating memories.

The first step to planning your wedding photography is to check my availability for your wedding date. I often book weddings 12-18 months in advance so it’s important to contact me as soon as possible. I believe it’s very important to get to know each other so that we can see if we’re a good match to work together, so once we make contact we’ll setup a date and time to get together to discuss the details of your wedding. If you’re not local to the Hampton Roads area then we can setup a meeting via Skype.

The next step is to book your wedding date with a formal contract. We’ll go over all the details of my packages during the initial consultation so that when you’re ready to sign the contract you’ll know exactly what’s offered and how much everything will cost. I require a 40% retainer fee to hold the date for your wedding and I accept personal checks and all major credit cards (in person so that you can sign for it).

A couple of weeks after the wedding, we’ll get together at the Purchase Session to look through the pictures and relive the wedding day all over again – I’ll bring the tissues! I select the best images and process them for color, contrast, and exposure adjustments, as well as add a few artistic enhancements to a select number of photographs. We’ll review everything and begin finalizing your order, including album layouts and print selections. You’ll also have a private web gallery where you can review the pictures at any time or share them with family and friends.

Note: We’ll schedule the Purchase Session for a time that works with the schedule(s) of everyone who needs to be present at the presentation (including parents and other family members). For your convenience, we can meet at your home or the home of another family member.
